Work is a good gift from God, mandated before the Fall of Man and intended for our benefit and for his glory. But, as with all things, it has been corrupted and idolized. In many cases, it is no longer something that we do for God’s glory and for the our family’s daily bread, but for our own glory and to build up earthly riches. We resist rest because we are certain that if we were to stop, the world itself would fall apart.
About Sabbath in her book, 10 Words to Live By, Jen Wilkin says this:
More than the deliberate cessation of work for the purpose of decompressing, Sabbath is the deliberate cessation of any activity that might reinforce my belief in my own self-sufficiency. In contrast to cultural ideas of rest marked by self-care, Sabbath rest is marked by self-denial. It requires that we deny ourselves the material gain or sense of accomplishment a day of labor brings. Our natural inclination is to believe that we are keeping the world rotating on its axis, a mindset that feeds a ceaseless work ethic. Sabbath presses on that mindset. It is not merely rest that restores, but rest that reorients. It reminds us that we are not God. And if we neglect it…we will most certainly drift toward the kind of work that enslaves.
My goal in creating a planning guide is not for you or me to create a system of unbreakable, universal rules that must be followed, but to help you as you create your own rhythm of rest that serves you, honors God, and reflects your season of life.
