New Seasons, New Anxieties

Spring is here! With the change of every season I become convinced that it is my favorite, but this year I find myself feeling slightly different about the new season. Rather than being excited for what the Spring is bringing, I have felt an uneasiness as I wake to warmer sunrises. Upon further reflection, I also noticed a self-inflicted pressure to work longer hours as the daylight extends and I find that my thoughts have been turned more and more frequently to the Summer months-my busiest time of year.

As I am sure you understand, it seems that there are never enough hours in the day and when I take time to consider what is in the coming months, I become increasingly stressed. Simply by considering some of the events that are still months away I can feel the tension entering my shoulders and I can’t help but wonder how much time I waste in my already full schedule with thoughts of the future. But in his kindness the Lord has reminded me each time of familiar words from his own lips: do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own (Matthew 6:34).

When I repeat these words to my worried mind I am reminded that God is not yet asking me to be faithful for future events, nor even for what will happen later today. Instead, he asks us to be faithful for this task, for this hour, for this moment. It is only when the time arrives that he provides the strength and grace we need to follow him in what he has called us to.

I want to acknowledge here, however, that there are seasons of life where it can feel impossible to move beyond our anxiety. Whether because of life’s circumstances or because of personal sin, anxiety can quickly seep into each area of our lives. If you are in a season of anxiety, worry, or fear, remember that you are not alone. In our greatest times of need, the Lord is near and ready to help. Remember the words of David is Psalm 34:4-5, I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.
