If you have ever struggled with anxious, intrusive, or unwanted thoughts, you have likely had scriptures like 2 Corinthians 5:10 or Philippians 4:4-9 quoted to you. But what exactly does it mean to take your thoughts captive or to think on what is true?
This PDF includes a three step process to taking your thoughts captive and is an expansion of a helpful metaphor from Esther Smith’s book A Still and Quiet Mind. In addition to 2 Corinthians 5:10 and Philippians 4:4-9, it was also created with the pattern of Ephesians 4:22-24 in mind:
- Separate Your Thoughts: put off the old self which belongs to your former manor of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires
- Evaluate Your Thoughts: be renewed in the Spirit of your minds
- Replace Your Thoughts: put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
While this process can be done alone, it is best done in community or alongside a mentor, older saint, or biblical counselor. Please also note that this is a general guide and may not be helpful for more complex issues such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
